The ever changing face of Great Falls National Park, Virginia
***Note: this page loads slowly due to the video clips and many pictures***
Great Falls National Park and Patowmack Canal is located along the Potomac River. The park has a visitors center and several overlooks to the Great Falls of the Potomac River. There are also ruins of the Patowmack Canal, that George Washington started and the town Matildaville.
I have a fascination with the Falls and we visit the park regularly. On this page I'm showing the different looks of the river in May, June and September of 2003 and December 2004.
Start from the bottom of the page to appreciate the changing faces of the river.
Raging waters after Hurricane Isabel, September 21, 2003
The river on December 28th, 2004, around sunset, ice on the rocks
December 28th, 2004 - The river stands high and the freezing temps have created ice deposits on the rocks

Ice deposits on the rocks

October 28th, 2003 - The water has receded a lot already

The fall foliage is just beginning

September 21, 2003 - The highest level this year

Churning waters, the rocks have all but disappeared

The same vantage point as the June and May pictures

June 8, 2003 - The floodgates higher up had been opened

While the river is at one of its highest points, the rocks still show well

June 2, 2003, after heavy rains

Again, from the same vantage point, this is a fall that kayakers like to negotiate

May 2, 2003

A heron flies over the river, the waterlevels are normal
