News Flash - New Motor

Listen to the new Spintech exhaust on the new motor!

This is my 1967 Chevrolet Chevelle. It's been 'back-halved', which means the rear frame has been replaced with a new frame to support the narrowed, fully-braced Ford 9" rear end, 4-link rear suspension and the wide Mickey Thompson tires. The car has a full 10-point roll cage, 5 way safety harnesses, racing bucket seats, sound-deadening interior, but everything else inside is stock. Just kidding.

The engine is a .070-over 427 tall-deck 4-bolt block housing a 454 crank (about 470 cubic inches), CompCams mechanical blower cam, Crane roller rockers, Mooneyham 6-71 supercharger, 2 Holley 750 double-pumpers (that were tricked out by the Carb Shop), and all of the estimated 800 horsepower is routed to the rear tires via a Continental 4500 RPM stall speed converter and a Mike's Turbo 400 transmission (complete with transbrake).

The car has 2" headers, and after the collectors go through 2 Spintech ProShootout mufflers via 3" exhaust tubing out to the rear via full tailpipes. Even with the mufflers and tailpipes the car is loud. If you'd like to hear what it sounds like, click here for a Windows .wav, or here for a Mac/Sun .au format sound byte (these are the old Flowmaster exhaust). These recordings suck, I never show you anything above about 2000rpms, and the microphone in my PC seems to distort easily and limit the recording. I'll do a better job, but for A little explanation on the sound files - the Windows .wav is about 1.4mb so beware. The .au is only about 500kb, but the quality is not as good. Also, the recording position changes. When the recording starts, the microphone is in the rear, and off to the left of the rear of the car. After a bit I pick up the microphone and bring the microphone near the engine compartment so you can hear the blower's whine. I was recording this in my garage and so there's a lot of distortion in the recording at this point, but you get the idea. Also, it was recorded on my laptop, so the quality sucks. I'll make a better recording soon...

That's me (the big dork with sunglasses), along with my nephew Logan (leather jacket) and my nephew Grant (in the stroller), at the "Hot Rods at the Beach" carshow at the Santa Cruz Boardwalk.

News - New Motor Done!

4/15/02 - It's done - the new motor is in and running.
12/01 - I'm in the process of building a new 472CI BBC for the Chevelle. This new motor will make more horsepower and be a more durable street motor. I've tossed the aluminum rods in favor of some heavy duty Eagle steel rods (complete with ARP L19 rod bolts), new JE blower slugs, a new killer blower profile mechanical cam (instead of the old roller cam), and various other tweaks. This motor's static compression will be higher before boost, and will allow me to run some higher boost pressures as well. It should hopefully be done by mid-February, 2002.
