Starting in 1989 with the 430EZ Canon has equiped all speedlites with a hot shoe
locking pin. All camera bodies since the the EOS 630 have been equiped with hot
shoes with locking-pin holes. When a speedlite equiped with a locking pin is
mounted on a body with a pin-hole, a fail-safe mate is ensured.
A Canon speedlite with a locking pin can be mounted on a body no so equiped, with the
thumb-wheel providing the only security (as with previous speedlite models.)
